How to apply mascara perfectly?

Like in the movies and even some girls at school can do it perfectly. I know i'm not going to look like a movie star or anything, but i just want my lashes to look longer and fuller. I'm pretty new to makeup, and i usually blot my mascara brush before i put it on because i don't like the clumps that i get otherwise. But when i blot, i loose a lot of the color, so my eyelashes look pretty much normal. how do you make your mascara look good, without the clumps of couse haha. Thanks!!
